For a while, this name brought to mind a smelly and dirty older man, but I think that it's very nice now! It's wonderfully classy and unique nowadays; I don't think you could go wrong with it. There isn't any problem with this name at all and it's very handsome. If you're looking for a female equivalent, try the beautiful name Verna!
I want to sound like I lived off in the mountains at one point in my life, and come back into wider society an old and grizzled being. Vernon has that kind of vibe I'd say.
Maybe it's something in the depths of my subconscious that I'm not aware of, but it sounds like a name they'd give to a nerdy character in a sitcom.
I love the name Vernon regardless what people have to say about it and I like the fact that V names are not so common right now. I knew someone with the middle name Vern but I have yet to meet a Vernon. I also have a daughter Vivienne and hopefully we get to name our son Vernon. We didn't plan on going with another V name but it was one we could agree on.
An ugly old man name. The nickname Vern is just as bad; actually it may even be worse. Such a bad name I wouldn't give it to a cat or dog- or anything.
I like this name. I think it's very underappreciated.
It never really made me think of Harry Potter. The first thing I think of is Elvis Presley's father. Still, I never liked it. It just sounds old-fashioned and outdated to me. I never made the vermin connection, but now that I know I cannot "un-think" it, so to speak.
I love this name! I think it's strong, handsome, very masculine, and outdoorsy. These traits also fit my grandpa, and Vernon was his first name. I don't agree with those who say this is an ugly name.
I don't like this name at all, it has no appeal. It sounds harsh and boring.
Reminds me of Harry Potter's cruel uncle Vernon. I hate that character.
I like this name, it's strong and handsome, but I may be biased because of my love for the name Verona. I wouldn't personally use it though because it's overused as a place name.
I try not to associate the name Vernon with the word "vermin," but it always ends up happening. And, as if this couldn't be more degrading, who wouldn't associate the cruel Uncle Vernon with vermin? It's really not a bad name. It's just unfortunate that a lot of people will stereotype it.
Sadly, forever connected with Vernon Dursley.
My father's name is Vernon and frankly no one cares about a "flat character" from Harry Potter. The main character in Harry Potter is Harry, and there hasn't been an insane increase in people naming their children Harry because of the book. Why? Because if you honestly let a book, even one as popular as the Harry Potter series, affect your decision to name your child whatever you are going to name it, you are a fool. If Harry Potter is the first time that you've ever heard the name Vernon then all that means is that it's a rare name, but why would you let the personality of the character bestowed with that name carry over with the name itself? That is just an example of someone who can't think independently and absorbs rather then interprets what they see and hear.
For your info people don't care if it's a bad guy in Harry Potter or his dog! My cousin is called Vernon so I'll probably never use it. :(
I know someone with the name Vernon. It is an uncommon name to say the least and because of Harry Potter, it may never really be liked.
I don't like this. It's ugly, in my opinion.
I think kids are going to associate this name with Harry Potter's uncle for at least a few generations, making it a bad choice for a baby.
