Gorgeous. Sounds very refined.
Classy, stylish, not too common - definitely one of my favorites!
A lot of people are saying that Violet sounds too much like "violent". I never really thought Violet that way though. When I think of Violet, I think of the flower Violet or the color Violet, which I like both.
It used to be my favourite name until I noticed the similarly to violent. It's a shame.
I love the name Violet, it reminds me of violent, which gives strong and fearless vibes, and also because it's my name.
Violet is a great name! It sounds close to violent implies fierceness and bravery, and being related to a flower also makes it seem beautiful. Also, it is my name so anyone who doesn’t like the name, RUDE!
Oh I love this name! So cute. I love flower names. It immediately makes me think of the color purple (obviously lol), the flower itself and just nature. The violent association never came to me. That’s weird. Guess it would work in her favor if anyone ever messed with a Violet *shrug*.
This is my favorite female name. Soooo delicate and beautiful. I imagine a strong, intelligent, gentle girl when I hear this. If I ever had a daughter I would name her this. If I ever changed my name, I would change it to this. I love it so much lol.
I would never use this name, it doesn’t flow well. Violet is a mouthful to say & ur almost compelled to say violent.
It doesn't sound like violent at all to me. It's such a pretty name.
I really like the name Violet and the nickname Vi is pretty too.
Classic and elegant name.
Looks and sounds quite ugly and mostly bad connotations. I prefer Violette. It's much prettier.
Sounds wayyy too much like violent for me to even like this name to be honest, but I’m sure most people think it does too. Bad name.
Favorite flower name, lovely.
It would be a perfect name for a female black pug!
Ok, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude but in the comment rules it says “Be as kind as possible. Consider that children may be reading the comments about their own names.” This is the case for me (well I’m not a child but not an adult) and my name is Violet and it’s really hurtful people saying this is a bad name and you would never use it because it sounds like violent. I understand, I used to be called Violent Violet just because it rhymed (I am not violent in any way shape or form) but it’s still really hurtful being told it’s a terrible name because personally I like my name. It just makes me feel like I have an awful name and that everyone must hate it and my parents did a bad job naming me. I don’t think it’s boring at all! I know it’s common now but when I was born nobody was named Violet. I’m sorry this is what you think…I just don’t think this is the right place to be saying those mean things.
Very stunning name! Violet is beautiful, because it's classic and timeless. Even though it's popular, it's very unique.
I can’t say the name without thinking of violence, not a good name to me.
I think it's so pretty and elegant. It reminds me of the color purple and violet flowers. I like it.
It's such a cute and pretty name. I associated it with the color purple and violet flowers. I like it.
Violet is very pretty! I don't think of the word violent when I hear it. Violet Baudelaire is also a good reference.
Violet is super pretty. So elegant and classy. It ages gorgeously as well, and the color is lovely. Wonderful name.
Sweet, dainty and feminine. Becoming a little popular now, but still a pretty name.
Nice name! And nice flower!
This name is elegant and pretty.
Nice name but sounds like "violent" so yeah, I would never use it.
I love this name! I wouldn't use it, but it still sounds pretty and associated with the flower.
Violet’s a nice name. It feels like the actual flower.
Classic, elegant name, Violet has quality. But I prefer Viola more, because it feels more stronger. Violet is a common, sweet name, but not of my favorites.
Violet is a stunning, literary name that evokes intelligence and fierceness, as well as being sweet and old-worldly. The critique of it being close to “violent” only makes the name cooler because she seems like a force to be reckoned with rather than a bland name that conjures up no mystique. My only downside is I don’t love the nickname Vi, but Violet is short enough that it works simply best on its own.
A beautiful name. It just seems classic and pretty.
I think Violet is a really cool and cute name! It is easy to remember and it is a perfect name to name a baby because people will remember it (again) and the baby will grow up to like it.I also love the nickname Vi! It also means you are beautiful and sincere. I hope you like my opinion and I wish you all good health in the new year! WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER!
My name is Violet Oriel. I hate my name so much I'm planning on changing my name because it's too girly for me. I love the spelling Violette better. But otherwise it's to girly for a girl like me.
It's cute. And it's also a beautiful flower. This name is definitely one of my favorites.
One of my all-time favorite names, I love it so much. Very elegant and sweet.
I like the nickname Vi. This name is nice.
Very elegant, gorgeous, and cute! I love it.
Sounds a lot better than some of the names you hear nowadays.
This name reminds me of that bald skinny dude from Lord of the Rings. DON'T do this to your child please- it’s the same thing as giving birth to a piece of trash.
Personally I love my name, it was on both my parent's baby name lists before they even met. Although I will say my fiance's name is Dash so the Incredibles tie in there isn't great. I don't think it's too dainty and the plant is absolutely lovey and quite hardy.
Violet will be a good name for me. Perfect to give a child this name.
Kinda hyper-dainty but okay as a middle name.
My name is Violet and I love my name! Everyone always gives me such nice compliments about it. I was named when the name Violet was still an "Old-Lady Name" so I hardly hear it on anyone my age. I do dislike that it is so trendy now, when I was born it wasn't even in the top 200 and as of last year it was number 36. A lot of people call me Purple, but that's usually only friends and family, and to be honest I don't mind that much. But overall, I love my name and would never change it!
Ugly, tacky name.
Please don’t do this to a poor child. I would absolutely hate being stuck with this name!
Cute and beautiful. Definitely at the top of my list.
I have always thought of Violet as a sweet, kind, creative girl with a big imagination. That's just what I see when I see a Violet in my head. I don't think it is a boring name, it is quite elegant and pretty!
Boring. Boring. Boring. Boring. Boring. Stupid. It sounds like violent AND I HATE IT SO MUCH NEVER DO THIS TO YOUR CHILD.
Personally, I think Violet is a very unique and uncommon name. You can be a tomboy and rock this name, as well as being a more so girly type. It doesn’t remind me of a flower as much as it would if the name were to be Daisy or Rose for example. Really, a fantastic name.
It's alright, but not my style. Besides, it's way too popular. It also sounds completely awful with my last name.
I love the flower and color. I prefer this as a middle.
What a nice name! 10/10!
Very pretty! I prefer this to Viola, which always makes me think of the instrument and its meaning in Spanish.
Cute.
I love this name, it is the name we chose for our 2nd child and only daughter - Violet Bettyrose. After being stuck on the name Morgan for the majority of my pregnancy yet dad not liking that name, after she was born the name Violet just came to me. At the time we named her, it was very uncommon, which is what I wanted. I wanted an uncommon name but nothing too out there, something classic and elegant, unique and graceful, and Violet is perfect. I also like the name Victoria. For her nickname we call her Vi (rhyming with Eye) or Vivi.
I also really like Vida/Vita as a nickname for Violet.
I love the name Violet Mae for a girl. The flower name is so pretty.
In the year 1973 Dunevant and Judy Andrews gave birth to their only child, Violet Sunshine. Having this name would be difficult as a child yet as a budding teen and woman, this name gave reverence to the beauty bestowed upon the glorious feminine flower to the elegance of the woman that carries a name filled with mysticism and undeniable beauty.
My favorite flower/color name! Although I'm not much of a fan of the other spellings, such as Violette and Violetta, or Viola. Violet is the best one in my opinion.
I actually really love this name, which surprises me, as it's not really the sort of name I'd like these days. It makes me think of Violet Baudelaire, a character practically worshiped when I was younger. It also makes me think of the girl from The Boxcar Children. Basically, the name just makes me think of the stories I loved throughout elementary school, and that's a really great association to me. Plus, Violet Baudelaire is just plain awesome. Any kid would be lucky to share her name. For anyone looking for an alternative to Charlotte or Scarlet, I think Violet's your name. It's strong, sweet, and individualistic. To the people saying it's too much like the word violent, I kinda find that cool. It's just a quirky thing that comes along with the name. If a kid is called Violent Violet or something, they'll know how to shrug it off. There are worse nicknames out there. Also, I think that Violet and Petra would make great twin names.I also hate the name Viola. My Spanish - speaking mind just sees it as the conjugation of the world for rape. If anyone says they're named Viola, I just think of that. If I try to bring that out of my mind, I think of the instrument.
I really *want* to like this name, but, I almost always hear "violent" when someone says it. I much prefer Viola (or Iris or Daphne).
This is my middle name! I really love it as a middle name but I wouldn't use it as a first name any more, it seems a little old-fashioned. I have it as a name because of my great-grandmother. Lovely traditional middle name!
Violet is a lovely, elegant name that suits both a young girl and an elderly woman. It makes me think of a field of flowers.
My name is Violet. I think my name is a beautiful name, but after a while it gets kinda boring... I would like to change my name but if I wasn't allowed, then it's fine. It's not a good name, there's better ones. But it is not horrible. Thanks mom and dad :)
My name is Violet. I love my name and I think it sounds really pretty, however, I really don't like that it's become trendy now. It was very unpopular in the 2000s when I was born and I kind of liked the vintage feel it had before it rose in popularity now.
Beautiful and cute name! Love the nickname Vi!
I love this name!
Soooo beautiful. Probably my favourite English name. Reminds me a really gentle and graceful lady.
I really like this name, it’s feminine and soft, but also strong. This name reminds me of meadows and bright colours.
Violet is beautiful. I like Adrienne Violet, with Violet as the middle name. Violet is a beautiful colour, flower and name. It has more nicknames than it looks as though it should have.
This name reminds me of my dog (Violet) and Violet Baudelaire, from "The Series of Unfortunate Events".
My daughter's name. We call her Vee, VeeVee, Vi, Vivie (Vi-Vee), the latter being my favorite. Used to call her Viola all the time, but haven't in the last few years. She loves me calling her Violetta with an over-the-top Italian accent. I also call her Veeva, Veeva Las Vegas, and I sing "Violetta!, Violetta Figaro!" In an opera style. She'll not tolerate nicknames like Lottie, Lettie, and Letta.
I love this name! It's cute and perky. It reminds me of a field of flowers.
Such a light and feminine name. And very victorian like, reminds me of a classy and respectable lady who is posh.
The name Violet is so cute and sweet. I think it works well as a first or middle name. (Especially as a middle name because it goes with a lot of first names.) But I don't like the nickname Vi, so to avoid this nickname I would use it as a middle name. So adorable.
As far as color names go, this one is the most common and most boring out of them all, in my opinion. I prefer my color names to be a bit more unusual; something like Cyan, Indigo, or Azura. As far as flower names go, it's exactly the same: boring and common, like Rose and Lily, and I'd rather go with a flower name like Calanthe or Dahlia. It's not an ugly name, it's actually very pretty, but it just doesn't stand out at all.
I hope to name my daughter's Violet and Autumn. I don't know which I like more, though
I think I like Violet a little more because of the Charlie Brown aspect. I am on the fence still. Violet feels so cool and edgy- a true individual.
I prefer the sound of this name when it is spoken, rather than the look of it written down. As others have said, it does look like the word violent and even more so if paired with a middle name beginning with N. Eg- Violet Nadia. But, getting past that minor issue, it sounds pretty and suits an earthy, hippy type. But I can also see it on a buxom old lady like my mum's aunt Violet. It would be sweet on a girl, and pretty on a young woman, making me imagine the bearer of the name to be pretty. This name also gives a valid reason to be mad about the colour purple! As I know lots of people who have a thing for red are favouring the name Scarlett. I love purple! And I love this name. It's 2 syllables (or 2.5) makes it a versatile length for many last names, and the V letter is a special letter to me, as it's also my initial. The thing that I'm not so sure about is the lack of a nickname, as my husband and I aren't crazy about Vi and don't favour lettie at all. But luckily this name is short enough that this isn't a deal breaker. And though it is in the top 100, this doesn't put us off. We haven't met a young Violet yet, so perhaps it's not popular in our area. But it's not an issue. Not like the top 10 names.
This name strikes me as poetic in a melancholy, mysterious way. So it's hard for me to imagine a cheery girl named Violet, though I'm sure they exist. I like this name a lot, I think it's one of my favorite names for a woman because of the connotations it summons. It sounds delicate, and yet this name makes me think of one with the strength to persevere through whatever misery she may face.
Violet sounds pretty but it does look a bit like violent.
This is the name of one of my fictional characters. She's outgoing, loves laughing, and is open to trying new things. I think that Violet is a nice name, but in a Cyan, Scarlet (AWESOME COLOR) way instead of a Rose, Iris (FLOWER) way. Sadly, we see it more in the media than in reality.
I have twin daughters Violet and LillyViolet Grace and Lilly Elize I think they are such pretty names and really suit my little twincesses.
Violet is such a lovely, elegant, pretty name. A fantastic name choice that ages well. :)
Violet is the name of my daughter. We get complimented on our choice of name all the time. We have never met another Violet her age and it fits her perfectly.
I love it! It's really sophisticated and elegant.
I love the name Violet! It seems very pretty, sophisticated, elegant, yet edgy. It's a great name for a little girl and a grown woman.
My name is Violet. It wasn't very common when I was growing up, (I'm 26) so everyone always thought of either the flower or the color. I wouldn't say I was teased, but my peers loved pointing out how similar my name sounded to the word violent. I can't tell you how many times I got things like "are you violent, Violet?" Or "watch out for Violet, she's violent!" Growing up. But, to my pleasant surprise, this name is now in the top 100. I would've never guessed my name would become trendy within 25 years but I guess with the rise of Lily people are moving on to other flower names. Nonetheless, it's a gorgeous name with a unique sound to it. A nickname I've gotten that I really like is Vi :)
I love this name. It was my Great Grandmother's name. She was Irish, and this name sounds pretty with an Irish accent. I absolutely love Violets, the flowers. They happen to be one of my favourites.
I love thus name! It is just sweet enough for a little girl but also mature enough for an adult woman. Very classic sounding and modern at the same time.
I have never made the association between 'Violet' and 'violent'.. I've only ever thought of the flower or the rich purple color. It's cute, but not high on my list of favorite names. ;-•.
Very pretty girls name that is starting to become popular again. I like it.
What a terrible name! It is only one letter from being violent. With that being said, this name is not a good option, not to mention, it is very dated.
I am in love with this sensational name! So beautiful!
I think this name is really lovely and vintage. I wish it weren't so trendy right now.
For the longest time, I hated this name. (It had reminded me of "violent.") However, the name suddenly came to me one day, and I fell in love with it. I particularly like the combo Violet Isabeau.
I think this is a wonderful name; lovely, strong, pretty, and mature all at once. Lovely name! :)
Violet was the name of my great - grandmother. I think it is classy and pretty.
Violet can fit any type of girl. Its sounding like 'violence' can be interpreted as badass or savage, the cute sound and phrase 'shrinking Violet' fits a quiet yet friendly girl, the 'V' makes it distinct, and it just seems smart. Maybe that's why it's gaining popularity, though still it's seen more in media than real life. And unlike most popular names today, this one is actually sensible.
So I have fallen in love with this name immensely! If I should be blessed with another daughter her name will be Violet Emmeline. The plan is her nickname could then be VV instead of Vi or Letty. My sister has a dog named this who's getting on in years but I think I will still use the name regardless since it is just wonderfully perfect. One day when I was thinking about names, I tried to think of ladies I'd respected growing up and Violet was one of the top ones. She was just as others had described the name to be very sweet and feminine yet a quite strength and maternal.
I love this, it has such a classic feel to it.
Violet is one of my favorite names, flowers, colors, and fragrances. A violet may not have the robust beauty of a rose, but it is sweet, tender, and endearingly modest as well as fragrant. This name also has a classic, old-fashioned feeling, which I like very much.
A beautiful but sadly very overused name. Name your daughter Violet and she will have to go through school being known as Violet B or Violet M or whatever (depending on her last name). A variation that I would use might be Violetta, which you could SHORTEN to Violet, but teachers could use to avoid confusion.
Poppycock! It's just not that popular and I'd only worry about that situation being a problem if it was top five which I seriously doubt it will ever be.Some people exaggerate the popularity issue enormously. It's a pet peeve. Others are Lila and Isla. Lila is gaining but not anywhere near popular and Isla isn't even in the game yet but I hear "they're overused" all the time with regards to America.
That is crazy to think that a child named Violet would have to be known as Violet M. or Violet C. or Violet whatever their last initial is. Violet was 231 for 2007 in the US and at least below 100 for the UK. You have to remember that even the top 10 most popular names are still just percentages of every baby named.
I'm sorry, it is quite a pretty name, but I just can't get past the word VIOLATE. It really ruins it for me. Other than that it would be a cool name.
I am a bit disappointed in this name's growing popularity as I do not want it to lose its distinction.
I specifically like this name because it sounds like 'violent' and 'violence'. I think it's such a fun contrast, as the name is so feminine, delicate, and elegant, but on the other hand, it's one letter away from 'violent'. That's awesome. The name is pretty and nicely short and simple, but I'm afraid it will turn into a popular name. It sounded quite old-fashioned to me only a few years back. I'm not thrilled about the fact that this is the title of a Hole track, as I loathe Courtney Love, and this was the name of the main character in that gawd-awful movie Coyote Ugly that I hate with a passion, but I think you can let those little things slide.
My favorite color is purple, so naturally I love the name Violet. I'm in the process of changing my name, and Violet is one of my top choices. My middle name is Rose, so I think Violet Rose sounds rather lovely.
I love the name Violet, it's my number one name for a girl. I would name her Violet Joy. I think it's feminine but not too girly.
I know that Violet is an old classic. But for me, it feels more like a hippie/nature name. The color Violet is a very sacred color. It's the color of the crown chakra, which connects humanity to spirituality. Not only that, but the crown chakra, is often referred to as "The Thousand Petalled Lotus", a flower in and of itself! I conceived and gave birth to my daughter, Violet, in the most magical 100 year old cabin. It was nestled in the mountains outside of Asheville, NC. In the Springtime, tons of beautiful purple and white flowers scatted throughout yard. When we moved, I dug some up to take with us. Later, I found out that they are wild Violets!
I love this name. Lily, Rose, and Violet are my favorite flower names. I love the nickname Vi.
There is something that I just love about this name. Although it does seem to be getting more popular.
I think this is a stunning name and I'm going to call my child Violet May. =]
I love this name! It sounds kind and free.
I think the name Violet is so classy I just love it. It has class and style. It's not too frilly but frilly enough. It's delicate and strong. Many things to me anyways when I see the name. I love names after flowers. This is a beautiful name. :)
Violet emits a sense of sharp sophistication and intelligence, at least, to me.
Okay, I love this name as do many others. This is the sort of name that is a "guilty pleasure" for many people. I cannot get past the dreadful "Vi" nickname. I wouldn't use it for that reason. Otherwise, it's very tempting. I'd like to see it on someone else's kid, just not mine.
This is a nice name. However, I would use this as a middle name.
Violet is beautiful name. I would definitely name my daughter this.
I like this name. It is one of my favorite flower names, next to Rose.
A violet is a lovely flower but it sounds too close to the word violent.
This name has such a pleasant and sweet sound to it. When I hear it I picture a sweet, pleasant little girl or mature, loving woman. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it becomes much more popular over the next few years.
Violet is such a beautiful name, it has an old-fashioned but not dated feel about it. Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters recently named his daughter Violet Maye after his grandmother.
I love this name because it has a strength to it, perhaps because of the 'V' sound, but it still sound very delicate and feminine and maybe a little dark.
I used to know a Violet, we nicknamed her Vi. I love this name because of her. She was so kind. Plus it's a pretty name.
I love this name, is so unique and pretty.
I don't like this name because it makes me think of the word violent.
My great grandma loved the flower violet! So I would like to name one of my own kids either after her or the flower!
