The first element of this name may possibly be related to the Greek adjective μέλας (melas) meaning "black, dark". The second element clearly derives from the Greek noun ἀγρός (agros) "land, field". As such, the possible meaning could be "black land", perhaps in reference to burnt farmland (which was burnt in order to make the ground fertile).
