The first element of this name is derived from Greek αναξ (anax) "master, lord, chief". The second element is derived from either Greek μάνδρα (mandra) "an enclosed space" or Greek ανδρος (andros) "of a man". The latter possibility is the genitive of Greek ανηρ (aner) "man".
