Meaning & History

The meaning and origin of the first element is rather uncertain: we know that it comes from #muni#, but we don't exactly know where #muni# itself comes from. But there are a few possibilities. It might come from Old Norse #munr# "pleasure, delight" (or "mind") or from Old Swedish #munilîc# "beautiful, loveable." Two other possibilities are Gothic #munan# "to think, to want" and #muns# (which comes from #munis#) "thought, will." The second element in the name comes from #þruþ# "strength."
