Meaning & History

From Welsh mawr "great" and budd "wealth". In Welsh legend Morfudd was the twin sister of Sir OWAIN and the daughter of King Urien by MODRON. It was also borne by a love interest of the 14th-century poet Dafydd ap Gwilym. It was used again in Wales 1900-30 but is now out of favour. Sometimes found misspelt as Morfydd.
Morfydd Llwyn Owen (1891-1918)was a highly gifted Welsh pianist, singer and composer, married to the eminent Welsh Freudian psychiatrist Ernest Jones. Tragically, she died at the age of 26 of chloroform poisoning after an emergency operation for appendicitis.
