Meaning & History

There are several possible explanations for the meaning of the first element of this name. It could have been derived from Russian #syroj# or #syroy# (сырой) meaning "raw" (also compare Czech #surový# or #syrový#, which also means "raw"). An other explanation is that it is derived from Proto-Slavic #širokъ# meaning "wide, broad" (also compare Czech #široký#, which also means "wide, broad"). Lastly (but most unlikely), it could have been derived from Russian #sirota# or #syrota# (сирота) meaning "orphan" (compare Croatian #sirotan# and Polish #sierota#, both of which mean "orphan"). The second element of this name is derived from Slavic #slav# "glory".
