Meaning & History

Latinized form of Greek Αιςακος (Aisakos), probably meaning "branch of myrtle". In Greek mythology he was a Trojan prince (son of PRIAM by ALEXIRHOE) who loved the naiad ASTEROPE, but, fleeing his advances, she stepped on a venomous adder and died. In grief, Aesacus hurled himself into the sea, but was changed into a bird by TETHYS (the Titan who personified the sea).
