Derived from the Persian honorific title Mirza (see MIRZA) combined with the Mongolian-Turkic title of imperial rank Khan, which is a contraction of khagan meaning "ruler, sovereign". Mirzakhan is now an archaic given name in Iran and can now only be found in surnames (such as Mirzakhani, which is a common surname). Taking into account the fact that people in Iran did not use surnames prior to 1919, it seems that Mirzakhan fell out of use as a first name in only the last 94 years. After all, since e.g. Mirzakhani is a common surname, there must have been plenty of Mirzakhans who gave their first name as a surname to their offspring in 1919 (when people were required by the Iranian government to start using a surname).
