Meaning & History

Perhaps derived from Greek ἀντί (anti) meaning "against, opposed, compared to, like" and αὔρα (aura) meaning "breeze". This is the name of a Greek demon of migraine headaches, who rises up out of the sea, moves like the wind, and enters into people's heads to cause intense pain. In a 3rd-century AD amulet inscription from Roman Carnuntum, Antaura is thwarted by the goddess Artemis, who diverts Antaura into the head of a bull in the mountains. Modern-day academics speculate that the demon Antaura developed from Abyzou, a Sumerian demon who kills children.
