Meaning & History

There are two theories regarding the origin of this name. It may be derived from Middle Persian m'tgd'l meaning "steward" through the original spelling ماذیار‎ (māδiyār). It may also mean "protected by the yazata of the moon", derived from Persian ماه (mâh) "moon" and Avestan yazata meaning "worthy of reverence", which refers to the Zoroastrian concept of praiseworthiness or worship (descended into modern Persian as ایزد (izad)). It was borne by an ancient Iranian prince.
