Meaning & History

Latinized form of GUÐRØÐR, an Old Norse cognate of GODFREY. It was borne by three Norse-Gaelic kings of the Isle of Man, including Godred Crovan (d. 1095), King of Dublin and the Isles, and his grandson Godred Olafsson (d. 1187). It was also used by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry for a character in 'Mountain Engines' (1964), part of his 'Railway Series' of children's stories.
