Perhaps from Greek παμ- (pam-), a variant of παν (pan) "all, every", combined with μέροψ (merops) "dividing the voice, articulate" or "bee-eater" (species Merops apiaster; compare MEROPS, MEROPE). In Greek legend this was borne by an Eleusinian princess, one of the daughters of King Celeus and Metanira.
