Meaning & History

Derived from an old Mongolian word that means "ten thousand", which via Tocharian may ultimately be of Chinese origin. The modern Mongolian form of the word is түм (tüm). Among the Mongol and Turkic peoples, a tümen (tumen in English) was historically also a social and military unit of 10,000 households and soldiers.

A notable bearer of this name was the Mongolian khagan (emperor) Tümen Zasagt Khan (1539-1592).
