Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain. The first element of this name might be derived from the noun στύμα (styma), which is the Aeolic Greek form of ancient Greek στόμα (stoma) meaning "mouth". Alternatively, this element could also have been derived from the Greek adjective στυμνός (stymnos) meaning "solid".

The second element of this name might be derived from the Greek noun φάλος (phalos), which can mean "horn" as well as be a term for a certain part of a helmet. However, a derivation from the Greek adjective φαλός (phalos) meaning "white" is also a possibility.

In Greek mythology, Stymphalos is the name of a son of Elatos, who was treacherously killed by Pelops.
