Meaning & History

Recent and popular Lithuanian name of which the meaning is uncertain, but there are several theories for its etymology in existence. One such theory is that it is a short form of Tadėjas and Tadėjus, which are both extremely rare Lithuanian forms of THADDEUS. The main (and also most common) Lithuanian form of that name is TADAS. Another theory is that the name is a masculinization of Tajisė, which is one of the Lithuanian forms of the feminine Greek name THAÏS.

A final theory is that the name is derived from the Lithuanian adjective tajų meaning "Thai", but this seems quite unlikely, as there is no immediately discernible reason for why the people of a northern European country would be fascinated with the people of a faraway country to such a degree that they were inspired to start using their ethnonym as a given name.
