Derived from Sanskrit सोमनाथ (somnatha) meaning "lord of Soma", from the name of the Hindu god SOMA and Sanskrit नाथ (natha) meaning "master, lord". This is an epithet of the Hindu god Shiva as well as one of the twelve major jyotirlingas (temples in which different representations of Shiva reside).
