Meaning & History

From the name of Apollo's master priestess at Delphi, who was also known as the Oracle of Delphi. The name is derived from Πυθώ (Pytho), which is the old name of the city of Delphi. In turn, the city's old name is ultimately derived from the Greek verb πυθώ (putho) or (pytho) meaning "to rot, to decay". Also see Python.
