Meaning & History

From the name of a mountain in the Basque region of Spain whose Basque name Ahuñamendi is derived from Basque ahuña "small goat" and mendi "mountain".

In Basque mythology, this mountain is home to Jaun Gorri (known as the "Seigneur rouge" in French) who guards an orchard on the mountain top in which the fruits of immortality grow.
