Meaning & History

This name is best known for being the name of the Frankish saint Laud of Coutances, who lived in the 6th century AD.

His original name was either Laudo or Lauto. It was the diminutive of a Frankish name, which contained either the Germanic element laitha meaning "to lead" or the Germanic element lauda meaning "growth". The saint's native name was usually latinized to Laudus, which ultimately led to the frenchified form of Laud.

The latinization to Laudus has often led to confusion with the Latin verb laudo meaning "to praise" (also see Laudatus), because it is quite similar in appearance.
