Meaning & History

Latinized form of Greek Λευκονόη (Leukonoe), derived from Greek λευκός (leukos) meaning "bright, shining, white" and νόος (noos) meaning "mind". This was the name of several characters in Greek mythology, including one of the Minyades (or daughters of King Minyas), more commonly known as Leucippe; she and her sisters were changed into bats for refusing to join other women of Boeotia in the worship of Dionysus.
