Meaning & History

From a combination of the characters 应 (yìng, meaning “responding, heeding”) and 龙 (lóng, meaning “dragon”). This is the name of a dragon that appears in several Chinese mythological texts, including the Shanhaijing (山海经) or Classic of Mountains and Seas. Unlike most Chinese dragons, it is winged. It aided the Yellow Emperor against his enemy CHIYOU, and later helped Yu the Great quell the floods of the Yellow River by creating water channels with its tail. It is commonly seen as a bringer of rain.
