Meaning & History

From a combination of the characters 瑶 (yao, meaning “beautiful jade”) 姬 (ji, meaning “princess” or “noble woman”). Yaoji is the goddess of Wushan, a mountain in southern China. Some sources say that she was a daughter of the Flame Emperor, while later ones incorporate her into the Daoist religion by making her a daughter of XIWANGMU.

She is most well-known from two poems, “The Ode of Gaotang” and “The Ode of the Divine Maiden”, both of which are attributed to the late Warring States poet Song Yu (c. 298 – 263 BCE). Both poems have her encountering a king of the Chu state, but while she invites the king to cavort with her in the former, she rejects the king in the latter.
