Meaning & History

Possibly elaboration of OROSIA. The famous bearer of this name was Doña Orofrisa (Orofrisia) de Mendoza y Castilla, married to Don Francisco de Cepeda y Guzmán, who was a nephew of Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515 - 1582). In other sources her named spelled as Orosia. This name was used by Lope de Vega in his play "Grand Duke of Muscovy" ("El Gran Duque de Moscovia")(1606?) for a Russian noblewoman, wife of Boris.
