Meaning & History

In Georgia, the usage of this name started in honour of the Georgian princess and queen Dinara of Hereti (10th century), who belonged to the Bagrationi dynasty and is venerated as a saint in the Georgian Orthodox Church.

The meaning and origin of her name is uncertain. It could possibly be of Persian origin, since her father's name was Adarnase. One Georgian source states that the name is of Kartvelian origin and means "girl" or "daughter", which makes the name related to the Svan name Dina. Another Georgian source states that the name is a Russian modification of Tamar, which originated from the 16th-century Russian story The Tale of Tsaritsa Dinara, which is thought to reflect the memory of queen Tamar of Georgia (1160-1213).

Lastly, an English source dedicated to medieval Russian names states that Dinara means "breath" but neglects to mention the language of origin, even though it lists the Georgian queen as the source (or prime example) of the name.
