From the name of the country in the Balkans, as well as various other places, perhaps ultimately from a pre-Indo-European word *alb meaning "hill" or from the Indo-European root *alb "white" (see Albus).It can also be used as an elaboration of Alba (the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland) or a feminine form of Alban.
