Meaning & History

Gelou is portrayed as 'some Vlach' (originally 'quidam Blacus', Vlach and Blacus meaning 'Romanian') being a leader of the Vlachs in Transylvania, and having his capital at Doboka. He was said to be defeated by the warriors of the Magyar chieftain Töhötöm.
Gelou is a figure in the Gesta Hungarorum, а medieval work written by an unknown author known as 'Anonymus', in all likelihood, at the end of the 12th century, approximately 300 years after the Hungarian conquest starting in 895-96.
