Derived from the Greek word eleutheros "free". This is the name of an island in the Bahamas which was originally named ELEUTHERIA; eleutheria means "freedom" in Greek, while eleuthera means "free". This is also the name of a granddaughter of Patricia Knatchbull, 2nd Countess Mountbatten: Eleuthera du Breuil (1986-).
