Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain. Possibly derived from the Old English elements ealh "temple" and hun "bear cub". Alternatively, it could be a variant form of Alcuin, Æðelwine, Ealdwine, or Ælfwine. This was the name of a 9th century Bishop of Worcester.
