This name is a transliteration of surname Coates. The word kooti in Māori means "court of law" and "prosecute." This was the name of Ringatū Church founder Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Tūruki (d. 1893), and the name of Ngāti Kahungunu Wesleyan missionary Kooti Te Rato (d. 1895).
