From Ancient Greek Μεγάβαζος (Megábazos), a Hellenized form of Old Persian Bagavazdā, with the first element influenced by Greek μέγας (megas) meaning "great, large, mighty". This was the name of a highly regarded Persian general under Darius I, to whom he was a first-degree cousin.
