Meaning & History

Uncertain etymology. Possibly related to Ancient Greek τείνω (teino) meaning "to stretch, extend; to strain, exert", to τίσις (tisis) meaning "vengeance, retribution; payment, recompense", or perhaps to Proto-Indo-European *tewh₂- meaning "to swell, to crowd". In Greek mythology, Tityos was a giant, the son of Zeus and the mortal woman Elara, carried to term by the earth goddess Gaia. He was killed by Apollo and Artemis when he attempted to assault their mother, Leto, then condemned to Tartarus, where he was stretched over nine acres, and two vultures fed on his regenerating liver for eternity.
