[Opinions] Ava and Caoimhe
My cousin has just had a baby girl called Ava. For one thing I despise this name but that isn't really my point. My point is, if I ever had a baby girl would calling her Caoimhe (pro. KEE-va) be too similar to Ava, which Caoimhe rmyhmes with? I really love the name Caoimhe and I am quite annoyed at my cousin for naming her baby a similar yet horrible name to a name that I might use in the future.Overall my question is this: are Caoimhe and Ava names to similar to be related as second cousins ?

Definitely not too similar. They don't rhyme, just have similar endings, and the spellings are very different so that's not a huge issue, imo.

I have a first cousin Kate, and it was never a problem. A second cousin is even less of a problem. plus, Caoimhe and Ava don't rhyme, they're Keeva and Ayva.

Technically, I don't think it even rhymes, it has the similar 'va' sound, but not the AY sound that is in Ava.Caoimhe is still completely okay to use with Ava. I mean think of how many sisters and cousins out there from our generation that are called Kelly and Katie, or Kaleigh and Riley now. It will be fine (and Caoimhe is a much better name, imo, than the ones listed above.)

Second cousins isn't much to worry about if you ask me, the only problem comes with siblings who have similar names. And I hate Ava and love Caoimhe too :)

I don't think they sound too similar and they won't be that closely related. I have relatives - one had a baby girl Emma and her sister had Emily a few months later. To me, they are very similar sounding and more closely related but I don't think it causes too many problems. My only problem with the name Caoimhe is that many people might have a problem spelling or pronouncing it, unless you are in Ireland or have Irish family. I think it's a lovely sounding name though.

Ava and Caoimhe are similar but if you ever do have a daughter she wont be with Ava all the time. If Ava ws Caoimhe sister then that would be silly.

Ava and Caoimhe don't sound anything alike in my accent. KEE-va and AY-va. And I really don't see why you should be mad at your cousin, she had the child first, what was she supposed to do say "well, I really love Ava but can't use it because my cousin may call her child Caoimhe in a few years time", sorry if that sounds harsh but its what I feel. If you love Caoimhe then you can still consider it, because even if they were rhymey they wouldn't get confused all the time as they do not live together, and may not even see eachother all the time if they are second cousins.

"Being mad at my cousin" is a hyperbole ! An exaggeration! Honestly, I was just asking an opinion as to in general whether they were too similar to be in the same family and of the same generation. Btw, my family and all my cousins are really close, we see each other twice a month.

Well, I got the impression you were upset with your cousin because you said in your original post "I am quite annoyed at my cousin for naming her baby a similar yet horrible name to a name that I might use in the future." Sorry if my reaction bothered you.I still don't think Ava and Caoimhe are too close, even if they do see eachother twice a month.

I think it depends on how close you and your cousin are. If you see each other all the time, then maybe they are too close, but if you'd only see each other once or twice a year, then I think it's fine.

I thought this was a question on siblings! If that were the case, I can see why you'd feel concerned they sound alike. But c'mon, they'd be cousins. I don't think name similarity is all that important outside the nuclear family.Besides, where I come from Ava and Caoimhe sound nothing alike.
