[Opinions] Pearl
What do you think of Pearl ? Ready for a comeback or just outdated ? Do you like it as a first name or just as a middle name ? I like it as a first name but I'm worried it will become the next Rose (uncommon as a first name but oh so popular as a middle name). I love Rose but would probably use Rosaline and just nn her Rose. I have a friend called Anne and people always say "Oh I have this as a middle name" or "Why didn't you parents give you a real first name" etc and I don't really like that. Will Pearl be just as overused as a middle name as Rose ? and as a first name ? Do you like it ?

My 3 year old is called Pearl and i love it - we have never met another one with the same first name and it does not bother me if it is used alot as a middle name because in the real world nobody really bothers with middle names.
When i see children called Rose and Grace i still think they are charming, despite their popularity in the middle spot
Pearl is lovley , but i very much feel that you either love it or hate it and i think this will keep it form becominf too popular in either spot.Clara

I love Pearl! It's on my list (along with Rose ;) as both a mn and a fn, though I'd much rather see Pearl (and again, Rose) as a fn. I wouldn't be surprised if it made a comeback, and I think it's ready. It fits in with the current Ruby, Grace, etc trend whilst still remaining rare and offbeat. I'd say go for it!Rosaline is also lovely, btw =). Sorry your friend Anne has to deal with the same comment often, but at least she has a lovely fn!

I think Pearl could make a comeback, but it's still better as a mn imo. I don't feel it will get as popular as Rose, but it will gain in popularity in the next few years.

I think it should have a comeback. It doesn't sound as old ladyish as Mildred and Gertrude.

I love Pearl. I think it makes a charming fn and also a lovely mn. I think it will achieve more popularity, probably in the wake of Ruby (which I don't like at all).

What's wrong with Pearl becoming rare as a fn but common as a mn? If you use it as a fn, it's still rare, right? Personally, I love seeing common mns used as fns. I love seeing uncomplicated Rose a a fn. The fact that the fn is so simple gives me free reign to have fun with a mn. Right now, Rose Dominique is my favorite Rose combo, but Rose Octavia is closing in on her.As an Ann Marie myself, I've never suffered from the fact that in the 60's, when I was born, there was a law* that every girl's mn had to be Ann / Anne, Marie or Lynn. No one EVER asked me why my parents didn't give me a real name. What rude people does your friend Anne hang out with? Seriously, I'm at a loss on this one. My best friend in high school (and to this day) is named Anne. Sure, people kidded us. But we never suffered from it. Are you planning on raising a psychological wimp who is felled by, "Oh, your fn is Pearl. My mn is Pearl"? I'm sorry to sound snide. But in a world of melting glaciers, this just doesn't strike me as all that big of a deal. Pearl is a lovely name that you love. I doubt it will become all that popular, as a fn or a mn. You'll be sorry if you don't use it, especially if your fears don't even come true and no one uses it for a mn.
[* There are no naming laws here in the U.S. I'm being facetious when I say there was a law in the 60's.]

I think it is definitely ready for a comeback, and is lovely as a first name. I have a feeling that it may become a filler middle name like Rose and Grace, which are equally as lovely. This shouldn't put you off. For some reason, I find it extremely hard to pronounce with my accent!

Thanks for you answer it really helped. Hmmm I guess I wouldn't like the fact that every second girl would have my daughter's name in her name somehow. But I guess it doesn't really matter. Anne also doesn't really care, it's just that it gets annoying when you hear it everytime you introduce yourself. But you are right. It probably won't even become popular as a middle name. The thing is I kind of like Estella Pearl. But it's too pretty to be in the middle position so I think about naming my youngest daughter Pearl I think that would be sweet.
