What are your general feelings on Araminta? Is it usable? Does the possible nickname 'Minty' put you off?

Pretty on paper. Stuck up, pretentious, would be my impression in real life. Minty would actually mitigate that - the right person could carry it off well, and it would be memorable and interesting.

Although I can't see myself ever actually using it, I do kind of like it. It's very . . . flavorful?. . . to me. Spunky and sophisticated. I think Minty actually kind of fun.

I love it in theory, and Minty would be really cute, IMO. But then I'm a plant freak as well as a name nerd. :) I would never actually use it, because the "mint" sound is a bit hard to really love the name.

I think it's usable, but I don't care for the nickname Minty. The good thing about Araminta is that there are other nickname possibilities. Ara or Ari would be nice.

It's totally usable, although I wouldn't use it myself. Maybe it is the mint but it seems somehow stripey and fresh, like crisp striped linen curtains. I used to work with one who was always known as Minty, so it sounds fine to me - unless your surname is McGinty or something! Min or Minnie would be fine too.

I really like Araminta and I think it's usable. I think Minty would be an acceptable household nn but not something to go by or be called in public.

Araminta makes me think of a character named Varaminta in a book I read. The author just stuck a v in front of the name. Minty is an OK nickname, I think.

I don't understand the appeal to this name. Every time someone mentions it, it gets a ton of praise, but I just don't like it. At all. All I hear is "mint."

We must just have a lot of mint lovers on the board ;)Actually I'm surprised at how much priase it gets too, I would never have guessed at it getting so many props from the board. It's a pretty over-the-top name, let's be honest.

Mmm, mints! :PI would use the nickname Mina to avoid Minty.

Or Ara for a nn. It's not my style either.

Uh, it's minty fresh? Minty does put me off but I can understand Araminta's appeal. It's usable but I'd rather see another nick such as Ara or Ari.

heartI really enjoy Araminta. It's so fun, whimsical and yet still has some great background. I love that it's a legit name that you never see. It really gets my imagination working. I think it is usuable, but certain parents would pull it off better than others. It is definitely an intellectual, artsy, rather anti-trendy kind of name. I could see it being used very successfully by a pair of Literature professor parents or an Arthurian magical wizards and unicorns nerdy kind of family. It's definitely not your run of the mill name. I like Minty. As BBH put it, it is rather refreshing ;) But I also like Min as a nickname. I find that rather darling.

"Arthurian magical wizards and unicorns nerdy kind of family"
LOL, I love this image. And it's so true.

I like it in a way, because it has an eighteenth century flavor to it, but then I don't like it, because of the "mint" syllable. The possible nickname Minty would definitely put me off. I guess I would consider it usable, though I would never use it.

I dislike Minty too. I think of a character from a television show I watched as a child, and the lolly [candy]. I'd use the nickname Mina.

I love it to pieces . . .I've loved it ever since I was a kid, when I read M. M. Kaye's "The Ordinary Princess", in which the titular character is named Amethyst Alexandra Augusta Araminta Adelaide Aurelia Anne (aka Amy, because, you know, she's ordinary). It's a delightful book, btw.Anyway, Araminta stuck, and I still find it absolutely delightful. I'm not sure I'd use it on a real child, but I'd be stoked to see it on someone else's child.Minty is cute, almost too cute, but I wouldn't let it put me off if I decided to use it.

I think it is usable and cute. Minty is a little annoying, but Araminta is "refreshing!" lol.
