My mom hates this name, which makes me love it even more. I'm totally diggin' this name because it's taboo and also because I've totally fallen in love with the saucy Renaissance portrait of Sybille of Cleves (Anne's sister) - check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lucas_Cranach_d._%C3%84._040.jpg
I like the look of Sybille but I bet I'd never say it right, so Sybil it is. What do you think of Sybil? You can make some combos for it if you like - I haven't quite got to that stage yet.

What about Sybil Flora Cornelia.
Cornelia was the name of multiple-personality "Sybil's" psychologist, and Flora was the name of the woman who wrote the Sybil book. It's like... the complete package. The whole journey in one name. It's also a super sad and beautifully confused name because there is all the controversy about whether or not Sybil was actually a multiple personality or if she was being manipulated by others in order to gain fame from her pain. Wowowow, so powerful. Yep, I love it, it's official.

I love Sybil and Sybilla. Sybil is just so goshdarned elegant, even though my main cultural associations with it are a witch (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Sybil_Leek) and Sybil in Fawlty Towers. Sybilla is so wonderfully medieval (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Sybilla_of_Normandy) and nice to say. I also have a bit of a thing for Sibylle, because I like Sibylle Baier. So hard to choose between them! but I'd probably go for Sybil, because less likely to get Billie as a nn.

The reason my mom hates it is because she thinks of a psycho woman with multiple personalities, like from the book/movie Sybil(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Ardell_Mason) - GASP Sybil's real name was Shirley?! I need to tell my mom this. Maybe it will help her not hate Sybil so much.

Sibyl was my favorite name for a long time! I love it! I do prefer the Sibyl spelling though, I just don't like the spelling of Sybil.

Whoa.... I never even noticed the difference in spelling. Why do you prefer Sibyl over Sybil, may I ask? I might have to write out the name a few times to see which I like better.

I prefer Sibyl too. I think Sibyl (or Sibylla in Greek) is the original spelling and I usually prefer those. Plus I think Sibyl looks more balanced than Sybil. I don't even know why but I don't like 'S' and 'y' so close together. That may just me being weird though ;)

Sibyl is the more authentic spelling. My guess is that the Sybil spelling came about because of confusion with Sylvia. I have no data on that. It took me a little getting used to because I used to spell it Sybil too. But it's not that difficult and I'm glad I did.
The authenticity is the most important to me. But I also like Sibyl visually. The "y" at the end looks more at home. This is an odd turn of my mind, but the "y" looks heavier than the "i" and so seems to belong after it.

I agree that Sibyl does look more natural. The Y does look more at home. But I can't write it properly! My handwriting obviously can't computer S-I-B with a capital S. Maybe I could call her lowercase-sibyl, a la bell hooks the feminist writer.
I guess I need to practice my Sibyl cursives and teach myself to stop using Sybil.

I have an involuntary negative feeling about the name, but I don't know why. It must have something to do with media type-casting of the name.
That said, it's unusual and I find it oddly fascinating. Enough that I could get over the gut first-association and really dig it. It would be cool if the name got another lease on life. The history behind it is awesome.

It is a name of passion, passion, PASSION. Sadness mixed with passion.
It needs a middle name with lots of twisty vowels, I think. Sybil Rowena, that type of thing. Vowels that contort your mouth.
