[Opinions] Marilla
I'm in an Anne mood today and a couple of her daughter's names, such as Joyce and Marilla, seem very appealing. I'm also liking Diana's daughter's name, Anne Cordelia. What do you think of these names? Also, what do you think of the following combos:Alexandra Joyce
Catherine Marilla / Marilla Catherine
Catherine Joyce
Máiri Cordelia

Well you know how much I love Anne so I have a soft spot for names like Marilla, Cordelia and Diana. For Diana to name her daughter Anne Cordelia was very touching. I also like how Anne had a daughter she named Marilla but called her Rilla. Joyce I don't like so much though, I prefer Joy.

I really, really, REALLY hate Marilla, sorry. It sounds harsh and ugly, and reminds me of someone saying Matilda with a lisp. I hate Cordelia, but LOVE Anne and the combo flows very well.Alexandra Joyce -Gorgeous, but I prefer Joy as I dislike Joyce.
Catherine Marilla / Marilla Catherine -LOVE Catherine...I prefer Catherine Marilla.
Catherine Joyce -Very pretty
Máiri Cordelia -How do you say Mairi? I dilike Cordelia a lot, sorry.

Joyce is one of the few surname-y girls' names I actually like. Marilla is quite pretty, too. I think the name Cordelia is beyond gorgeous, but Ive never been keen on the name Anne. I prefer the names Ann and Anna. Alexandra Joyce - OK. I like Alexandra, and I think Joyce is cute, but the combo could be better.
Catherine Marilla / Marilla Catherine - I prefer Marilla Catherine. It's very pretty.
Catherine Joyce - Like it. Sounds both strong and sensitive.
Máiri Cordelia - Like it. I wouldn't be excited about Máiri if it was on its own, but combined with the stunning Cordelia it looks and sounds good.

I always loved Small Anne Cordelia's name. :) I can't think of it without the "small" part on the front, since I never managed to get all the way through the series--only up to the point that she appeared. (I literally read only the first chapter or so of the book where Anne's children took over the story, heh.) I also love Joyce (and Jocosa!) and Marilla "Rilla," though I'm too much a fan of Amaryllis "Rylla" to want to use it.Alexandra Joyce~ I'd be far more interested in seeing Joyce Alexandra. Alexandra is so boring at this point.
Catherine Marilla / Marilla Catherine~ The C works well here--I suppose because Marilla was a Cuthbert. :) I generally prefer the spelling Katharine, but Marilla Katharine looks too hard.
Catherine Joyce~ Katharine Joyce, though, I could handle. Once again, I'd much prefer Joyce Catherine, since I know way too many Kathryn/Katherine/Catherines who are of elementary school age.
Máiri Cordelia~ I like this one best of the combos here, I think. Both names are lovely, and they sound nice together.Array
So oftentimes it happens that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we have the key.

Joyce Alexandra is fantastic, as is Joyce Catherine! I like the look and sound of both.I, of course, am a fan of Máiri Cordelia and I'm glad to see that someone else likes it, too. :) To me, the combo sounds a tad bit Old-World-ish and mystical.

I love the names that L.M. Montgomery uses in the Anne books, well in all of her books! They just sound so fresh and neat when used on characters with this sort of old-world charm that Avonlea brings!Joyce is one of my favorite middle names beacuse it's my gram's name and I haven't quite convinced myself that it's a perfect first name yet! :) Alexandra Joyce is just beautiful, imo! :)I loved Marilla is Anne of GG, and I've never really read the other books in the series but I believe that Anne's Marilla is called Rilla, right? And that is a beautiful nickname! I'd go with Marilla Catherine because Marilla is such a beautiful name, unique (you notice it's not in BtN's database) and the combo just flows better this way! :)Anne Cordelia is just beautiful too! or Cordelia Anne would have been nice but then it wouldn't have honored Anne quite so much. Catherine Joyce is pretty but a bit on the plain side, I don't know, just rather a more popular choice.
Máiri Cordelia is just beautiful! The two names flow together nicely and just seem to compliment eachother so well! Also Máiri Catherine wouold be nice, thought it is a bit plainer. As always you have wonderful taste in names, Mahska! :)

I very much agree with your first sentence! L. M. Montgomery used charming, utterly classic names for her characters. I'm glad to see that someone else likes Joyce. :) It seems to be stuck in fashion limbo after experiencing some popularity in the 40s and 50s. It's so sweet, though, and deserves to be dusted off and used again. I really like the nickname Joy, too, which Anne also used.Anne's Marilla is actually Bertha Marilla, but yes, she was called Rilla. I actually like the name Bertha, however I like Marilla so much more. Rilla is a delightful, endearing nickname which would transition well from childhood to adulthood. And yet someone else who like Máiri Cordelia! I'm so pleased at how well the combo has been received. Perhaps I should consider Máiri Cordelia and Mòrag Davina as twin names.Thank you for your lovely compliment on my naming tastes, dearie. I appreciate any and all kind words very much. :) _____
