[Opinions] Jessie
An old favorite that I can not seem to let go. Problem: I don't like any full names for it. I really dislike Jessica. Jessamy sounds too creative and doesn't do anything for me. While I like Jessamine and Jessa, I don't like them enough to use.Do you think Jessie works on its own?
Do you think it's overused (it is a nickname for Jessica after all. Do you think many of them go by Jessie?)
Do you think I should put Jessamine on her birth certificate even though I don't love it? I plan to pair it with a classic middle name. Jessie Virginia, for example.

JeanTraditionally, Jessie was a nn for Jean. I'd love to see a sleeper like Jean make a comeback. And Jean Virginia is a lovely combination. She's have her choice between two zippy nns: Jessie or Jeanie. Win-win.And if Jessie was a nn for Jean, I don't see why it couldn't also work as a nn for Jane. Jane Virginia? :-)

I love Jessie, but I do only like it as a nickname. I'm lucky though because I love just about every Jess- name, all the way from flowery Jessamine, to dated Jessica, down to Jesse on a boy. Jessamyn is even a prominent family name for me. Do you think Jessie works on its own?
Yep, I do. As a standalone, it's actually never been out of the top 1000. Although, as I said, I do prefer it as a nickname, I think it's well established on its own. Do you think it's overused (it is a nickname for Jessica after all. Do you think many of them go by Jessie?)
I think many do, but at least as many go by Jess or Jessica and will gut you if you call them Jessie. :) I would never call Jessie uncommon, but I don't think it's overused on its own. Do you think I should put Jessamine on her birth certificate even though I don't love it?
No way! I don't think anyone should ever put a first name on a birth certificate that they don't love, especially not when it's just to get to a perfectly usable nickname name like Jessie. She could force you into abandoning Jessie altogether by opting for Jessamine in full or a different nickname like Sami or Minnie. If you could grow to love Jessamine or Jessa, it would be the best of both worlds, giving her plenty of options, but if you can't, the risk isn't worth it. Jessie Virginia is really cute. It's full of retro charm, like something you'd find on a BA in 1910.

I like Jessie :) So many nicknames are used as full names (especially here in the UK), like Molly, Alfie etc. so I think it would be useable as a full name.Do you think it's overused?
I don't think it's that overused. I know a few Jessicas my age, but none of them go by Jessie (mostly Jess) and I don't know any younger children called Jessica or JessieDo you think I should put Jessamine on her birth certificate even though I don't love it?
I think Jessamine is really pretty but there's no point in giving it as a full name if you're never going to use it anyway!

If you're only planning to use Jessie, then surely it doesn't matter much if you give her a "full" name or not. What would matter, to me anyway, is that giving a child just a nicknamey name means they have fewer choices later on, when it'll be out of your hands. I was at school with a Jessie Mary; she had Scottish ancestry, and it seems that Jessie can be or once could be a nn for Janet. That would be a stretch! But Jessamine nn Jessie would make perfect sense and give her Jessa, Mimi, Minnie etc as options - and she might not want to change, but if a porn star or a serial killer named Jessie ever lives in the same town, more wiggle room rather than less could be very welcome. The Jessicas I know have all been Jessica or Jess. Not a Jessie among them!

I also like the name Jessie, just Jessie. I think it could work on it's own, it's not like it hasn't been done before! Jessie Virginia is quite sweet.

I think Jessie works on it own, it could be mistaken for the boys name Jesse though. How about Jessamyn (as a different spelling of Jessamine), Jessalyn or Jessenia as full names for it?
