Which do you prefer, Guillermo or Guillaume, and why? Do you think the nickname Gil is a good option?

How are you pronouncing them to get Gil as a nickname?
Objectively, I prefer Guillaume, but I think they are both very tied to their respective languages of origin, and I would be very surprised to meet a Guillermo who wasn't Spanish or a Guillaume who wasn't French. I'd honestly much rather see a William, or even a Willem.

Gil isn't a verbally intuitive nickname. It's more a nickname visually.

I LOVE Guillaume! Guillaume is soft and handsome. Guillermo is harsher which makes me like it less.
My favorite nickname for Guillaume is Guy (pronounced the French way). I can't say I'm a fan of Gil.

If I had to choose, Guillaume, and yes Gil as a nickname is fine, but I'd seriously question why anyone in an English speaking country would use either. Pretentious as hell. At least for the native-born.
This reminds me, when my son William took French, and the kids were going to be called by the French equivalents of their names in the class, he told me that his teacher told him that there was no French equivalent of William. I said, "What? Yes, there is. Guillaume" and I spelled it for him. How could a French teacher think that?
