Peter - it's always been a favourite name of mine

Peter paired with my surname would make a dirty joke so I'd go with John, nn Jack. I do prefer Peter.

I like them both! There are drawbacks to both names for me however, I don't want to use names of living relatives and my uncle is John, but then my sisters ex-husband is Peter. I guess John.

(I haven't read any of the other responses.)Well, I did name a child Peter, our younger son. I think it's a fine name. John is good too...my late brother was named John. Both are good names both for a child or adult. I should say that our son is always called Peter, never Pete.

I'd use both. I probably like John a bit more. John Peter is nice!

If I had to, John. John is boring, but I don't mind how it sounds. Peter is one of my most hated boys' names.

Peter. John is too old manly for me.

Peter and call him Pete.John is either a toilet or a prostitute's customer to me. Not to mention that it has a horrible sound.

JohnBetter associations for me.

John. I really like it.

John. I actually did name a child that. It's a family name, but I also just like it better.

John, because while Peter isn't really that bad, it sounds a bit prissier and more buttoned up. Besides, Johnny or Jack sound better as nns than Pete, which always makes me think of a kind of buffoony cowboy.

Oh, I would name a child either one if my partner insisted on one or the other. I believe Peter has a slight edge in my own choosing, because I like Tchaikovsky so much.

I love both, but I'd be more likely to use John as it's an honouring name for us.

My dad's first name vs my brother's middle name. :)I'd pick Peter. It's no contest for me, since I would never honor my father. My brother is a much better person, and I like Peter more anyway.

Neither. But if I had to pick, I'd go with John.

John. It has a much more consistent history of use, at least where I live - I have many ancestral Johns of all periods in the family tree, but not one Peter. I don't dislike it, but it feels dated in a way that John doesn't, and I don't know any under 50. And I prefer Piers.

John. Both are very classic and traditional, so I wouldn't really want to use either, but John is definitely nicer.

I would probably choose Peter because I can imagine a little boy called Peter. Also, I am not that keen on the name Johnny so that would make me avoid John

I like both, I can't decide. A few months ago I'd have said Peter. But right now, probably John.
vote up1
John, simply because I dislike Peter and all it's nicknames.

I wouldn't name a child either of these but in an hypothetic situation, John.
