It's pretty as eh-LAY-na or eh-LEH-na (long EH sound). Can't stand EH-leh-na (with short EH sounds). It is nice but doesn't really stand out because of Aliana, Eliana, Alaina, Alayna, Alina, Alena, Amaya and all the similar names.

I really like Elena. It's soft but means business at the same time. I know a couple who named their daughter Aleyna a few years ago. Why, I have no idea. She's half of Hispanic/Latino descent and I'd think that would lend some weight to the traditional Elena spelling but it didn't work that way.

I've liked Elena for a long time, since I was a kid. It was the name of the main character in a book series I loved in middle school: The Vampire Diaries (which went on to become a relatively popular show). It may have also helped that I didn't know any real life Elenas till I was a bit older and none of them were offensive in any way. It's pretty and elegant and not overly used at the moment, though judging from the charts I think Elena has a high possibility of breaking the top 10 within the next five years. It has that same sort of vibe as Evelyn, Sophia, Emily, and Olivia that people like.
