Help[Opinions] Tyrone & Mary
This was a sib set I met today and it surprised me partly because Tyrone would be seen as dated here now and not coming back anytime soon. Where as Mary I was less surprised to hear as it is part of the generation of names making a comeback here.
What do you think of Tyrone and Mary?

I like Mary; used it as a mn for my daughter. Tyrone seems rather old-Hollywood to me, but I could be wrong; not a movies person at all.

My first thought if I met young siblings named this would be that they were named for grandparents or great-grandparents, although Tyler and Simone still get some use here (and Tyrone sounds like those, plus Roan and Sloane). I don't care for Tyler or Tyrone particularly, but I do like Ty as a NN. I've met Marys of all ages; it's nice enough.
(Like RoxStar said, I've only seen Tyrone as a black name except for Tyrone Power, but it doesn't seem like a bad name to me generally, just stereotypical in that way. I'm 34.)

I immediately think of Mary Tyrone, the main female character of Long Day's Journey into Night, so the sibset is odd to me.

Old-time Hollywood star Tyrone Power notwithstanding, in the US Tyrone is consideed a black name, to the point of bordering on an offensive cliche. Also extremely dated to the sixties and seventies.
Mary is just Mary. It's a bit less anonymous than Jane only because you so often see it used in combination with other names like in Mary Lee, Mary Beth, Mary Kay, Mary Jane, Mary Jo, Mary Ellen, etc.

I live in the U.S. and would never associate Tyrone with an "offensive cliche," for what it's worth. It definitely doesn't have the stigma of Shaniqua, for example.
ETA: I just did a Google search and found ample discussion of the stereotypes associated with Tyrone. Maybe it's generational? I'm 33 and had no idea the name had such a potent racial valence...
