It's a pretty name in and of itself, but sounds a bit mean: stereotypical blonde girl with pink streaks in her hair and dark inside...

Funny because I always picture a dark haired girl, must be the Vanessa Hudgens effect. It does have a bit of a mean girl vibe, but not too much to put me off. However it is pretty dated to me.

Same here. I always picture a dark haired girl when it comes to this name. For me, it's likely due to Vanessa Hudgens as well, along with Carlton, and the fact that I went to school with for a number of years who was a brunette.

A good, classic name. I had a friend in kindergarten called Vanessa, though she wasn't a blonde mean girl; she was a brunette little Italian girl, who was friendly as I recall. Probably because of that, I've always pictured Vanessas as brunettes, but I guess everyone's mind is different. The name itself not a top favourite of mine, but I can appreciate it.

I've met a majority of brunette (caucasian) and Hispanic girls named Vanessa. However, I think that Vanessa would suit a redheaded girl beautifully (though, I can definitely see this name with any hair color, including blonde).

I think Vanessa is a beautiful name. It's feminine but not overly frilly, romantic and has a lovely meaning of "butterfly". I would categorize it as a "New Classic".

One year at uni, the two dishiest men in the class were both dating tiny, dark, exquisite girls named Vanessa. I like the name, and I liked the two Vanessas: not usually my style, and I doubt if I'd ever use it, but it's good.

Vanessa has been one of my longest-standing favorites for a girl; I absolutely love it! I have only positive things to say about this name.

Its uninteresting but I like Ness as a nickname.

It's a great name for a villain sort of character, there's something cold and sinister about it in its deliberate prettiness. I think I get an uncanny valley sort of reaction to it, because it IS a name by design, being a modern invention. There's a hint of the unnatural to it. That's fun.

You said that perfectly.
The name is uncomfortable to me.
