DARETH
Hi all, new here! Anyway, my name is DARETH, and try as I might, I have never been able to find any information on my name, no matter how much searching I do. Once a very long time ago, in a very old baby names book, I saw it listed as a variation of "Dara" meaning "heart of wisdom". I have also been told it is a Welsh/Gaelic name, but never been able to learn any more about it. My mom got it off of a game show when she was pregnant with me (it was one of the contestant's names), so there is really no help there, she just liked the sound of it. I don't know if this information is relevant, but I was born in 1978 if that helps at all. Anyone with any info, or any links to info or any ideas on how I could obtain info would be greatly apppreciated!

Dareth was the name of the third wife of the British actor Anthony Newley. Through Google I also discovered Dareth as the first name of a government employee in Swansea, Wales. My guess would be that Dareth was a name created in Wales during the late 19th or early 20th centuries as part of the revival of Welsh nationalism. Daron was the name of the ancient Welsh goddess of oak trees and is listed as a girls' name in Heini Gruffudd's Welsh Personal Names. My guess is that Dareth was invented by someone who blended Daron with other Welsh names ending in the sound -eth such as Gwyneth because they thought it sounded more feminine that way. A great many names used in Wales have been recent creations of that sort.I will emphasize that the above is just an educated guess based on the name having been used in Wales and my limited knowledge of the creation of new names by the Welsh nationalist movement. You would have to track down that game show contestant and find out how she got the name to be sure.

I too have been in seach for a meaning. My mother died when I was young so i couldn't ask. I did a paper on it when I was younger a remembered finding the word "Dare" in the Oxford Englisg Dictionary. At some point there was a referenec to a old english derivitive of the name "Dareth" refering to a girl who was bold or fearless. It seems to suit me. The irony here is that you and I are similar in age. I was born in 1979. Our mothers most have scene something similar but I don't think mine would have gotten it from a television show but who knows. What game show was it and do you know her full name?I don't think I will come back here so please email mefly_girl_4_hi-r@yahoo.com
