Most in-depth information on Tristan acknowedges that Drystan's change to Tristan was directly influenced by French "triste", because of the character's tragic fate.Just as you could say the name Rose only has the partial meaning "rose", Tristan probably does partially mean "sad", if that was the intention behind its form.
