I believe this woman is the main inspiration for Edel's use in Ireland:

It says on Wikipedia that Edel Quinn's birth name was Edelweiss. (At the bottom, in the external links section.) Very interesting name for an Irish girl. I wonder if her parents pronounced it with a w or a v sound.

I too found the name Edel a while ago and was intrigued by it.
