I do really like Aurora nn Rory. This isn't decided yet but I was thinking of setting the book in Seattle because it's the only city I know super well and I feel that you either need to visit the city you are writing about a ton or you need to live there to really capture its essence. Part of what I love about Dresden Files is it is set in Chicago and from what I remember the 4 or 5 times I've visited is that he really captured Chicago in his books and he references real places and streets, I think if you want to write an urban fantasy which is what this book I want to write will be then it is a good idea to make your urban setting alive, you either need to invent a place or you need to really research well a real location. If I move somewhere else or have the time I may set it somewhere else but at the moment I plan on setting my book in Seattle.

Now the one issue I have with the setting for the book being Seattle and naming her Aurora is that Aurora Street is one of the seediest crime ridden streets in Seattle. It's one of the few crime ridden streets in northern Seattle, everyone around here knows of its reputation, it's where you go if you want to find hookers and really cheap crappy motels and adult movie / book / etc stores. It sadly from what I hear has many underage girls prostituting themselves there, I see prostitutes there all the time but I've never been certain of their age. No one even calls it aurora street they just call it aurora, around here you say some place is near aurora and everyone knows that you mean aurora street.

When I was at college in Olympia I met an Aurora nn Rory and I finally stopped disliking the name, I really like it now even for my own children but I know I could never bring myself to use this name if I still live in Seattle in the future. Think of one of the seediest streets near where you live and then imagine naming your kid the same name as that street.

Hmmm do you think it doesn't matter since if I ever did get it published it wouldn't only be people from Seattle reading the book? The only problem is that sometimes the character might need to go to Aurora.
