Elsa hits the mainstream
As an elementary teacher, ever since the movie came out I've been hearing constantly about "Frozen." The vast popularity of the film makes me wonder what this will do to the name Elsa. To me, it's always been one of the pretty, obscure forms of Elizabeth. It sits safely in the US top 600, but has been gradually gaining popularity. I think it has all the qualities of an up-and-rising name for 2014. WDYT?

It's currently in the 500s and has been rising for the last 10 years, being the highest it's been in 30 years... I can't see it getting overly popular though. Anna is currently 35 and a more common name so I can see that getting a good bump. Elsa may be able to get into the 300s in the next few years, where it hasn't been for about 100 years, but I can't see it getting higher than that tbh. Even at the peak of its popularity it only hit 215 in 1895. It's still got that slightly foreign sound to it that I think will impede its popularity with most Americans, even though it's the name of a popular character from a popular movie.

Absolutely. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes top 20 here (in the UK) next year - so close to Ella and super-popular Isla.

I hope it doesn't continue to rise, although I think it probably will! I want to use Elisabeth and I'm thinking about using Elsa as a nickname. It's already #177 in the UK, where I'm from.

I both love and hate to see it gain popularity. It's been on my list a long time, well before Frozen and I think it's such a beautiful name. However, it's growing popularity is also why it's moving further and further down my list. I know names are popular for a reason, I would just have a hard time using it now.

Totally. 100%. Elsa will be on the rise. It's gorgeous and I'm happy/sad - sad because it only just started growing on me before Frozen damnit. I think it even has some staying power.

No, didn't you hear? It won't be popular for 20 years! (the super dumb article that was recently posted said so https://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/parents-are-naming-their-babies-after--game-of-thrones-192431634.html) Yeah, it could go up. Now, the question is, is it going to have an Ariel kind of popularity? (Movie came out in 1989-- Ariel was #210, 1283 children; two years later it was #66, 5410 children, and then two years after that, it had fallen back to #121) Or will it be more long lasting?

I agree. Frozen has taken away the image of grandmother figure that has been associated with the name for a while now. It has definitely done that for me and I recently put Elsa on my PNL.

If the Little Mermaid and Lion King II made the names Ariel and Kiara jump into the top 100 and Princess & the Frog caused Tiana to hop 300 places, I don't see why Frozen can't do that to Elsa.

I agree. This movie is HUGE with little girls, and consequently, their moms. Couple that with its similarity to powerhouse Ella and rising star Isla, like Pie mentioned, then we have all the makings of a major rise for sweet Elsa.

Yes! I totally agree, it is gonna be right up there with Ava, Ella, Sophia which all are beautiful names With that said it has the potential to become annoyingly overused which is sad for me because Elsa is definitely in my top 5 if not top 3. Depending on what grade you teach, let us know in about 5 to 10 years how many Elsa's you have in class!! (As if we wont be well aware of its popularity by then). We should just have a memorial for the beautiful name Elsa, thanks Frozen.

If it's in a popular movie, then look out! All that's needed is for a celebrity or two to use it too and boom, it will explode! Names in popular movies and tv shows always influence naming choices
