Wow! Very grand! I wonder whether that was a jocular nickname somebody with a much more common name used when communicating with friends.
As I'm sure you did, I looked quickly at the Mormon IGI site and noticed a father-and-son set in Wales surnamed Jones.
There were also a few of that name, older than this son (b.1830), who married in Wales.
Other than that, it seemed to be a Puritan name taken to America.
I wonder what the diminutive is!
