Thoughts on short list of boy names?
A miracle has occurred. I actually have a list of boy names I like! They came from a place I never expected to find them - German names. I made a shortlist of some of the more "colourful" favourites and would love some thoughts on them. Carsten
Korbinian
Thiemo
Egon
Emmerich
Kayetan
Kasimir
Lanzo
Marzell
Torben
Waldemar
Knut
RainerThanks everyone!

I understand your feelings, I too struggle with boy's names.Carsten - I know someone with this name. I feel neutral about it. I don't love it but it's different to the standard so it has that going for it
Korbinian- I like Korbin but the ian on the end seems an overkill
Thiemo- Is this said as Thee-mo? Reminds me of emo and Nemo simultaneously
Egon- Hmmm, sounds a bit medieval.
Emmerich- I think I like it, not sure though
Kayetan- Nope
Kasimir- sounds very established and a little evil
Lanzo- very spunky
Marzell- Marzell is very casual and easy-going, with the downside of not caring enough about anything
Torben- cool, I really like this. It does sound similar to turban though
Waldemar- Kasimir's slightly less terrifying younger brother
Knut- Knut and Bolt would make good cat names
Rainer- not feeling it

Carsten - This is so cool. I'm going to have to add this to my list.
Korbinian - I personally think it's too much. Korbin is enough for me.
Thiemo - It's very interesting, but I don't like it.
Egon - I love Egon! I didn't know it was German.
Emmerich - I like the idea of it, but I don't like the name itself, if that makes any sense.
Kayetan - Another interesting one.
Kasimir - Love Kasimir, but would never use it.
Lanzo - I prefer Laszlo.
Marzell - Prefer Marcel, but this is very neat.
Torben - Once again I prefer Tobin. But Torben is really cool in its own right.
Waldemar - I don't like it.
Knut - Or this one.
Rainer - Ver cool, but unusable.

I like Kasimir. Carsten could grow on me, but it probably wouldn't. If you like German names, maybe you should check out Swedish/Scandinavian ones, too? Egon, Waldemar and Knut are all used in Sweden too.

Carsten - At my husband's high school the students had to write a letter to their future selves and it was given back to them at the 10-year reunion. So Bernie got his back 5 years ago, when we were pregnant with our first. Among other things, he had written "my first son will be named Carsten / Karsten". Sadly for him, I hate it so much. Which is kind of weird, because I actually really like Carson and Carter. But the -sten ending has always been so so whiny to my ears. Kirsten is probably the most whiniest name of all time in my books!
Korbinian - a word to describe something or someone from Korb or Korbin. :) But but Korbin / Corbin / Korban / Corban I can handle.
Thiemo - Not sure I love all the 'extra' letters, but Timo is awesome.
Egon - really don't like the look of it
Emmerich - Yes. Awesome! I prefer Emeric, but Emmerich is very handsome too.
Kayetan - Wow, very cool. Out there - which is a plus for me. I like it.
Kasimir - I dont actually like it, but it is gutsy enough that I'd appreciate it!
Lanzo - Very fun, but it feels like a nickname to me. I'd totally combo it up to get that nickname: Landon Zachary, Langdon Zeev, Lanford Zander. One could even 'get away' with it for a name that ends in -lan, of which there are many. But I get that Lanzo is also a name in its own rite.

I actually know a Knut and an Emmerich, so I vote "go" for those. Though, Emmerich is way better. Knut is a bit hipster. Carsten - works but a mite trendy methinks. I still like it but prefer the similar Crobin or Carsen, but not by much. Korbinian - seems to go on a little too long. I would just go with Korby and call it a day since that is likely what people would call him. That said - its a gutsy choice. Thiemo - no opinion. Can't picture it in reality. I would need some time to mull it over. Egon - Works. Only because it has a slight science-fictiony feel to it (imo). I don't love it, but I would respect it. Emmerich - classy. Kayetan - almost looks Kre8tive. I prefer the Italian Gaetano or French Gaetan. I know a Gaetano so I know that works. Kasimir - heard it before. I like it. A bit cashmir-ish, but that is a lovely material. Lanzo - good name. I love Laszlo, and this is like a marriage of that and Lando... I like it. Marzell - totally usable. I would do it. I love Marcel and the z gives it an extra cool factor. Torben - works. Double checked to make sure it wasn't unisex since I know a female Toben. I like it though. Waldemar - say it in the German accent... and it's a bit like announcing a magician. Waldemar ze great und powerful! Just saying. Cool alternative to Waldo though. Knut - Works, heard it, a bit hipster... not my style, but ok. Rainer - I actually might know one of these too (I work for an Austrian company and used to live in Berlin, DE). I like it. I think it works and it has more class than Rain (and I like Rain, in theory).

I live in Germany, so some of these names are quite familiar to me, and some are considered very old-fashioned here.Carsten - I like it, prefer Karsten though
Korbinian - This is quite popular in the part of Germany that I live in, I think it's a great name
Thiemo - I prefer Timo. I also like the similar Tielo / Thilo
Egon - don't like it
Emmerich - it's ok, I prefer this spelling to Emeric
Kayetan - I like it
Kasimir - Like it, I also like Casimir
Lanzo - don't like it
Marzell - Marcel / Marcell is a lot more popular here now. I'm not a fan of either.
Torben - I prefer the similar Torsten
Waldemar - Not really used here anymore, but it's not bad
Knut - Better on a polar bear :)
Rainer - Middle-aged man's name here, I think it's ok

Hooray! I'm glad to see a real live German person giving some feedback! It's very helpful :)I like Karsten too, but thought it had a more shrill, youthful-trendy look to it than Carsten.Thilo is a super cool name, thank you very much for introducing me to it! I like Timo too, but thought it looked rather nickname-y. Thiemo looks more like a complete, full name to me.I'm totally in love with Knut. It's so happy. It really is perfect for a polar bear, or maybe a big yellow dog. So why not a boy? Boys are happy! ;)

I'm actually from the UK, but as a name-nerd one of the things I love about living here is hearing/seeing a lot of unfamiliar and interesting names. I really like a lot of German names :)
